But not many tourists go to the village of Piquicho in the Chota Valley. It is near the Colombian border, about three hours drive north of the capital, Quito. Life for people in this village is hard, and many of them haven’t got houses, only simple huts. But there’s something very special about Piquiucho: half of the footballers who played for Ecuador in the World Cup in 2002 and 2006 (a total of 11 players) came from this poor village.
